A new sawn goods terminal and more container field capacity to be constructed in the Port of Oulu
In the past, the Port of Oulu was an important export port for sawn goods. During the past few decades, sawn goods have accounted for a relatively small proportion of the total volume of traffic in the Port of Oulu. In 2009, a significant increase was generally seen in sawn goods exports, and many operators in the field showed a growing interest towards the services provided by the Port of Oulu.
The old sawn goods terminal measuring 4,550 m2 that was completed three years ago can no longer meet the needs of current traffic volumes. In order to improve the preconditions of exports the Port of Oulu has drafted a project plan entitled ”The Project Plan for Phase 1 of the Construction of the Western Quay”. The key aim is to increase sawn goods storage capacity as well as to increase field capacity for storing project cargo and containers in the immediate vicinity of the quays.
The Port of Oulu will launch construction of the new 6,000 m2 sawn goods terminal and the container field for project cargo and containers measuring more than 14,000 m2 in the summer of 2010. The project will be carried out over a period of two years so that plumbing, stabilisation and the foundation for the warehouse will be completed in 2010. The rest of the construction will be undertaken in 2011. The costs of the project total about €4.1 million.
