Significant improvements at the Nuottasaari main quay
The main quay in Nuottasaari is over 50 years old. Measuring about 330 metres in length, the quay is currently used mainly for handling kaolin, chalk, salt, and lumber. In addition, talc is handled and loaded using the belt conveyor located in the southern end of the quay. Other cargo is handled using mobile cranes.
The location of the Nuottasaari quay is logistically optimal with regard to the StoraEnso factory buildings. In addition, the flow of the Oulujoki River enables the port basin to stay unfrozen for practically the entire winter season.
In 2007, ground and condition assessments were carried out at the quay. The poor condition and unevenness of the surface structures have been a significant setback in making use of the quay area, as port machinery requires a platform that is even and has good carrying capacity. Cleaning the quay area of cargo residues is also very difficult because of its unevenness. In addition, the extremely limited carrying capacity of the quay complicates its efficient utilisation significantly.
50 more years
By renovating the quay and the adjacent area, the operational life of the quay will be extended by 50 years. Renovating and fortifying the structures brings about effects enhancing the functionality and competitiveness of the port. Among other things, this improves the logistics and functionality of the entire area, making the operation of the unit formed by the quay and areas behind it smoother, enabling the efficient mobility of transport machinery in the quay field. Thanks to this, cargo residues awaiting processing can be removed from the port area in an environmentally friendly manner. In addition, the wash system constructed in conjunction with the basic renovations will improve occupational safety and the level of service in the port.
Service level of vessels to be improved
Water services of the vessels are currently handled at the Oritkari port. After the renovations and alterations, this will be possible in Nuottasaari as well. Ships can acquire water from special water supply points placed in heated hose cabinets in the quay’s water points for washing. The collection of vessel sewage will also be improved by placing a pump station for sewage in the quay area. From the pump station, the collected sewage will be transported through a pressure pipe into a sanitary sewer to be constructed. A sewage sewer measuring about 210 metres will be constructed in the quay area, with a total of 4 inspection wells about every 70 metres.
A shore power feeding point for vessels was constructed in Oritkari in 2006. Preparations for shore power feeding are now being made in Nuottasaari as well. In conjunction with the renovations at the quay, cable charge pipes will be fitted along the quay line.
The renovations are set to start in April next year. The channel depth at the quay will remain at 6,.4 metres, as the depth is sufficient for vessels visiting the Nuottasaari quay in the future as well.
