Port of Oulu: A new 13-metre fairway
Last spring, Stevedoring and Operations Manager Kai Collan, a long-time employee of Herman Andersson Oy, brought up the possibility of the Port of Oulu building a new fairway measuring as much as 13 meters in depth to the north of the current Oulu fairway.
The Port of Oulu studied nautical charts, and the Finnish Maritime Administration (FMA) made a draft for the location of the fairway based on the Administration's own study data. However, defining the exact location of the fairway required the area to be charted using multi-beam equipment or other methods approved by the FMA. The FMA study programme for the year 2008 had already been decided on, so measurements for the new Oulu passage could no longer be made over the summer.
The Port of Oulu decided to take charge and self-funded echo-sounding measurements of the new fairway based on the preliminary plans made by the FMA. The investigations were sped up due to mining projects in Northern Finland that are of interest to the Port of Oulu. In terms of acquiring clients from the mining industry and ensuring the level of service required, the depth of fairways plays a major role in the competition between ports.
The Port of Oulu received the research report for the new fairway in late October. The study was carried out and the report compiled by FCG Planeko Oy. The surface of the area studied measures about 16 square kilometres and its length is around 42 kilometres. Based on preliminary examinations, there are a few spots along the area of the new fairway that require dredging in order for the new 13-metre fairway to be constructed. Based on the measurements, a ground study programme will be drawn up for the coming winter, when the necessary sampling can be conducted on sea ice.
